Story

Robert James Stiles (Oct 23, 1969 – July 8, 2025)

Rob loved fire trucks. From a young age, his family often shared stories of him hearing sirens in the distance and running alongside the trucks through the streets near his Toronto home. Being a firefighter was simply in his blood, so it came as no surprise when he eagerly joined the Wilmot Fire Department in Baden as a volunteer.

Rob loved telling stories about his time in service: heroic moments, community involvement, and rescues. One that always made me giggle included the recounting of his first save: a cat that, immediately after being rescued, turned around and ran back toward the fire, giving him the opportunity to save it all over again.

As a mature student, he completed his Fire Service diploma at Conestoga College and could not have been prouder in his cap and gown, holding his daughter’s hand in one hand and his baby girl in his arms.

When Rob was hired by Kitchener Fire, he found his brotherhood. He wore his nickname, “Blue,” with pride and approached every day like it was his first. To him, this was more than a job. He had finally achieved the dream he had carried his entire life.  Rob loved to cook and was king of the smoker and BBQ. He took great pleasure in trying new recipes, perfecting a rub, and always striving to make the perfect birthday meal for the crew.

When Rob fell ill, he did everything he could to remain part of the fire department. He contributed at the Children’s Safety Village, reviewed fire safety plans, and completed home inspections. His desire to return to active service was unwavering, but sadly it was not meant to be.

Rob passed away on July 8, 2025, surrounded by family and friends, after facing ongoing health challenges and, in the end, lung cancer. Through it all, he continued to find ways to stay connected to the profession and people he loved.
