Story

Joe Schlatman was a dedicated 35-year member of the Hanover Ontario Fire Department. He was promoted to Captain in 1990 and then became Deputy Chief in 1998 until his retirement in 2002.

He was very passionate about his community and was proud to call Hanover home for his entire life.

He was a devoted husband and life partner of 56 years to his wife Barb. Joe had a tremendous love for his family, who miss him every single day.

He was very passionate about music and shared his tremendous musical talent as a member of the popular local band The Dimensions.

He loved a great warm-weather day which would allow him the opportunity to enjoy the sun while lounging by the pool, listening to music and reading a good book. After retirement he enjoyed many great years escaping the cold winter temperatures for a more tropical climate.

“Safety Joe” worked at BNBP (now Bruce Power) in the Safety Shop where he was known as the computer guy long before the IT department was a thing. He volunteered on various community-based boards within the Town of Hanover, had a radio show on the local radio station, and loved keeping Hanover’s history known and documented.

He was a true asset to the community and was loved and respected by many for his willingness to help, his sense of humor, and his caring down-to-earth nature.
