Kevin Joseph Pittman
Lieutenant
Story
Kevin Pittman (1941-2013), of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador (born in Lamaline), served as a firefighter with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department from 1969, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1994 after 25 years of service. Kevin was a proud union leader who dedicated much of his time and energy to supporting his fellow firefighters. He served for many years as President of IAFF Local 1075, was the founding Chairman of the local's Occupational Health and Safety Committee, and President of the Atlantic Provinces Professional Fire Fighters Association.
Kevin loved being a firefighter and was a member of the Honour Guard throughout his career and into retirement. In 2024, his family received the IAFF Martin E. Pierce Commemorative Line-of-Duty Death Medal, recognizing Lieutenant Pittman for his death from occupational cancer. Kevin was a devoted and caring family man who cherished above all else his time and memories with his wife, Ruth, children, grandchildren, his firefighting family, and his many other loved ones.
Kevin was deeply committed to community service; beyond the fire department, he served as a town councillor and volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and All Saints Anglican Parish. In 2012, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to honour his lifelong commitment to bettering his community. Kevin’s smile and laugh lit up any room; he freely shared his warmth and kindness with everyone and was happiest when surrounded by the many people he loved.
