Douglas A. Duncan
A/Deputy Fire Chief
Story
Douglas A. Duncan
Doug became a Fire Fighter in the Edmonton Fire Department L209 in 1964. He was recognized for his dedication, loyalty and expertise in his chosen career and as a result he participated and assisted in a variety of areas. Doug followed in his Uncle Charlie Duncan‘s footsteps who retired from the Fire Department as the Chief of Training. Doug joined the Training Academy and shared his expertise and skills with new recruits. Doug also travelled to Washington DC representing the Emergency Response Department to assist in identifying candidates for promotion within the Washington DC Fire Department. Doug assumed the position of Deputy Chief in 1993 and remained in this position until his retirement after 32 years of service.
Doug was born to parents Edward and Amelia and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He and his brother William (Pat) attended Spruce Avenue Elementary, Highlands Jr High and Eastglen Composite High School. He played football with the Eastglen Blue Devils and the Edmonton Junior Wildcats. Doug had many interests and loved the game of Hockey. He played minor hockey in the Bellevue Community and with the Canadian Athletic Club. He played with the Edmonton Oil Kings for a short period of time, and it was with this team, during “initiation”, that he was given a new haircut. The haircut reminded one team member of a Muskrat, and the nickname never left him. Muskrat’s love of sports went on to include a tryout with the San Francisco Seals of the WHL. He then played with the Vegreville Rangers Senior Hockey Team and an Oldtimers team known as the Rusty Nuts. Doug was involved in competitive curling and played at the Thistle Curling Club. His love of sports carried over to the Edmonton Fire Department where he also played hockey and curled.
Doug is forever remembered by his wife Brenda; his daughters, Debra (Don) Pukalo, Sandra Duncan, Susan (Ajaje) Yaggey; his grandchildren, Layne (Samantha), Spencer (Averi), Jake, Ashley; his great-granddaughters Stevie, Scottie and Lenni. Doug married Brenda McIntyre in 1962 and together they raised their family in Edmonton. Doug loved to celebrate occasions, cheer for the Oilers and to vacation in Arizona with Brenda, family and with friends. He enjoyed the excitement of Thoroughbred Racing as a patron and horse owner. Doug lived a full and rewarding life surrounded by family, friends and co-workers.
