The purpose of the CFFFEP is to promote post secondary education for the children of a firefighter whose line of duty death (LODD) is recognized by the Foundation or the spouse/common law partner of a firefighter whose line of duty death is recognized by the Foundation by providing financial support to students for educational purposes through the awarding of scholarships and bursaries.

Application for Scholarships and Bursaries
- Applications for scholarships or bursaries must be made on a form provided by the CFFFEP.
- Application forms may be downloaded from cfff.ca/CFFFEP.
- Applicants may submit an application for either a scholarship or a bursary award, not both.
- Applications will be accepted by the CFFFEP between March 1st and July 31st for consideration for the following academic year beginning in September, unless the application period is otherwise modified by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Applications received outside of the prescribed period will not be accepted.
Submission of Applications
Applications must be mailed and are to be received at the Foundation’s head office during the published application period. Fax or email applications are not acceptable unless previously authorized in writing by the CFFFEP Committee.

Decision of Award for Scholarships and Bursaries
Decisions to award either a scholarship or bursary will be based on three factors:
- The applicant’s academic qualifications.
- Information provided by the applicant regarding experience and community involvement.
- Financial needs.
Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation Education Program Scholarship Awards
- A scholarship is a monetary award paid for up to a maximum of four years of post-secondary undergraduate studies. A four year scholarship award may be awarded only to first year undergraduate students at a post secondary institution.
- A scholarship will include tuition and books to a maximum amount of $6000 annually or as otherwise determined by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (the Foundation). Payment(s) will be made directly to the post-secondary institution or to the student on submission of appropriate receipts. In the case of non-Canadian post-secondary institutions, payment will be made only to the student in $CAD at current exchange rates on submission of appropriate receipts from the institution.
Scholarship Eligibility
- A scholarship is available to the children of firefighters whose line of duty death is recognized by the Foundation or to the spouse/common law partner of firefighters whose line of duty death is recognized by the Foundation.
Note (1): The definition of “spouse” and ‘common law partner” used for this Policy will be adopted from the definition published by Revenue Canada that is current at the time of scholarship application.
Note (2): The spouse/common law partner must have been living with the LODD firefighter at the time of their death.
- There is a financial need for the scholarship.
- The applicant must be accepted for enrolment in post-secondary institution of their choice.
- The applicant must have an academic average of 75% in their last year of secondary school or province of Quebec equivalent.
- Scholarship recipients must maintain a ‘B’ average or acceptable equivalent in order to be eligible to receive the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year scholarship awards.
- The applicant must be active in a community &/or volunteer program(s) &/or active in extra-curricular activities either with or outside of their current educational facility.
- The applicant must be willing to provide their Social Insurance Number for tax purposes if a scholarship is awarded.
- If an interview is required to assess the scholarship application, the applicant will be notified and arrangements made for interview by CFFFEP Committee members. If applicable, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the Foundation.
- Scholarship recipients are not eligible for a bursary.
Notification of Application Decision
All applicants will be notified in writing of the Foundation’s acceptance or non-acceptance decision.
Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation Education Program Bursary Awards
- A bursary is a one-time monetary award. A bursary is available for any single year of undergraduate studies at a post-secondary institution.
- There will be only one bursary awarded to each person.
- Payment will be made directly to the student.
- Bursaries will be awarded based on the availability of CFFFEP funds.
- There will be a maximum of six (6) bursaries awarded annually.
- A bursary will be a maximum amount of $3000 or as otherwise determined by the Foundation.
Bursary Eligibility
- Bursaries are available to the children of firefighters whose line of duty death is recognized by the Foundation and the spouse/common law partner of firefighters whose line of duty death is recognized by the Foundation.

Note (2): The spouse/common law partner must have been living with the LODD firefighter at the time of their death.
- The applicant must be accepted at or enrolled in a post-secondary institution of their choice.
- The applicant must have an academic average of 70% in their last year of secondary school or province of Quebec equivalent if a first year applicant, or a ‘B’ average or acceptable equivalent in the previous academic year if applying as an undergraduate.
- The applicant must be willing to provide their Social Insurance Number for tax purposes if a bursary is awarded.
- If an interview is required, the applicant will be notified and arrangements made for interview by CFFFEP Committee members. If applicable, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the Foundation.
- Bursary recipients are not eligible for a scholarship.
