About Tumbleweed Distilling
The community lies in the shadow of the Cascade Mountains creating a hot, sunny, dry climate. For this reason, the area boasts its own climate zone called "Osoyoos Arid Biotic Zone." Canada's lowest annual precipitation, warmest annual temperature, and warmest freshwater lake can be found here. This arid zone is the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert which extends from Mexico into Canada.
This is where the proving ground for unique barrel aging shines through. Intense dry heat encourages Whisky to dive deep into the pores of new make barrels, while the intense cold in winter months aggressively release the liquid back into the cask. This past New Year’s Eve saw the first fundraiser of 2024 for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. For the second year in a row, a memorial hockey game was played in Lennoxville QC in memory of Sherbrooke Firefighter Eric MacKeage, LODD at 59 years of age on August 17, 2021.
After the game, a dinner and dance were held at the local Unit 318 Army, Navy, Air Force (aka the Hut) Club. With the support from many generous local organizations, businesses and individuals, donations totaling $4,507 were raised and forwarded to the CFFF.
Firefighters from Sherbrooke Station 6, Eric’s station, brought truck 306, a 100 foot 2021 E-One Quint to the rink and stood by as the game was played. After the game FFtr Scott Passmore accompanied by Lt Pat Martel, FFtr Andy Gingras and FFtr Thomas Blais, presented Mike McKenna, CFFF 2nd vice president, with a check for $1,000 from the SPQ Syndicat des Pompiers du Quebec, Sherbrooke Local, towards the event fundraiser.
Many volunteers gathered to share the work involved to make the event possible, as folks in Lennoxville always do. Most notably in attendance of all events was a very courageous Donna Harden, Eric’s widow, who sadly passed away March 15th from her own 15-year battle with cancer.
The Foundation would like to thank principal organizers Francois Gilbert and Ryan MacKeage for all their time and effort in making this event a success once again. Hats off to all.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our Administrative Officer and dear friend Mr. Kevin Connolly.
Kevin passed away at home surrounded by family and friends.
Although never a firefighter, Kevin had been associated with the fire services for many years and there was never enough that he could do for departments or firefighters.
His work for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, whether in his role as Administrative Officer or as an Ambassador was a real passion and inspiration, and he took great pride in the work of the Foundation and his interactions with our families.
Although he is gone too soon from our physical presence, he will always be with us in the work we do.
During this time, as we endeavor to ensure business continuity, we ask you to please be patient with any delayed responses and we promise that we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Rest in Peace Kevin.

The Toronto Fire Fighters Celtic Society Memorial Ride for the CFFF. A Brief History of How a Random Thought at the 2016 Canadian Memorial Has Evolved into Becoming the CFFF’s Largest Sponsor/Fundraiser.
Captain David Cossitt
CFFF Ambassador
President of the Toronto Firefighters Celtic Society
Initiator & Organizer of the Memorial Bike Ride to Ottawa
Toronto Fire Services Captain David Cossitt has always had a predisposition for community service, particularly through his involvement with The Toronto Fire Fighters Celtic Society where he serves as their current President. In his words:
“I had attended the CFFF Memorial in 2016 and was very disappointed with the showing of Firefighters at the service. I was thinking to myself, what can we do to try and bring awareness to the CFFF service. I was thinking of what other emergency services do and came up with the idea of a bike ride. I reached out a few fellow firefighters (who were cyclists) with the idea of a 2-day ride from Toronto to Ottawa. They didn’t think it would be possible to do. I said oh well I’m doing it anyway.
I reached out to the Toronto Association and Department for support as well as a couple of sponsors to help cover some costs. I restricted it to Toronto only riders the first year as I was flying by the seat of my pants, we had 13 riders the first year.
My original objective was to raise $10 000.00 the first year, boy was I disappointed as we raised $5500.00. But 12 of the 13 riders had never been to the Memorial that year so I guess that was a positive to the event.
As the size of the ride has grown, I think more and more people have heard about the ride and have become interested in the ride and the cause for what we ride for. This is by far not an easy ride and is a huge commitment. Many riders have shared their stories of the ride and the friendships that have been gained while spending three days in the saddle along side fellow firefighters that they have not known before.”
This of course is an example of David Cossitt’s legendary modesty and out of the box thinking about how he can make a difference. He has done this throughout his career which led him to take on the mantle of President of the Toronto Fire Fighters Celtic Society which of course makes broader community contributions to worthwhile Fire causes such as Camp Bucko, but none has taken more of his time than the annual CFFF Bike Ride which has now become the largest fundraiser the CFFF benefits from, all because of one Toronto Fire Fighter’s original vision.
David adds:
Becoming the largest fundraiser for the CFFF is something that I am most proud of and would be considered a highlight of the ride. The ride has brought over 200 Firefighters together over the 7 years that have developed friendships and I hope lifelong relationships that will help make the bond amongst Firefighters and their families stronger.
As the ride has grown there have been many challenges, this would include getting support vehicles and drivers, finding hotels that can accommodate us and finding enough sponsors to help offset the cost of the ride, so it can continue to grow. Each year there are always weather challenges and route changes due to construction along the way. With the help of the various Police Departments and Fire Departments along the way it has become much easier.
At least for next year the size of the ride will be limited to the current size, Max. 75 riders. This year was a big adjustment from the 56 riders in previous years and I think a few things need to be ironed out to make the group size manageable.”
For those of us who have witnessed the logistical challenges, the time involved is like a full-time job and some. Bottom line, over the 7 years of the ride, David and his team of cyclists have raised over $360,000 making the Toronto Fire Fighters Celtic Society the CFFF’s largest benefactor/sponsor.

OTTAWA, ON – In a significant step towards strengthened support for families grappling with loss, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) has announced its collaboration with Wounded Warriors Canada.
Following last month's National Firefighter Memorial weekend in Ottawa, this strategic alliance paves the way for Wounded Warriors Canada to amplify its national mental health provider role. This collaboration will prioritize the distinct mental health needs of the spouses and children of fallen firefighters.
President of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, David Sheen, stated, "Our Foundation's commitment has always been clear: to honour, remember, and support the fallen and the families they left behind. The alliance with Wounded Warriors Canada deepens our resolve to provide critical support to these families in their moments of need."
Scott Maxwell, Executive Director of Wounded Warriors Canada, added, “Through our ten-year history, our guiding principle has been to honour the fallen and help the living. This partnership is the embodiment of that effort. Providing innovative and culturally specific mental health support to the family members of the fallen is a core value in our spectrum of care. Above all, partnerships are vital – no single organization can do this important work alone. We look forward to working with the Canadian Fallen Firefighter Foundation now and in the years to come.”
Given recent studies, the new partnership between the CFFF and Wounded Warriors Canada takes on an added urgency. With 34% of Canadian firefighters screening positive for PTSD symptoms, the mental health crisis among these first responders cannot be understated.

On May 4th, International Firefighters’ Day and in honour of the world’s firefighters, Niagara Falls will be transformed into an incredible, red colored water and light masterpiece on both sides of the American Canadian border -- and the CN Tower Toronto will be illuminated in red rotating every half hour in honour of the occasion.

“All Canadians are deeply grateful to the brave women and men who put their lives on the line every day for the protection of life and property,” said David Sheen, president of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “An illuminated Niagara Falls, a wonder of the world shared by Americans and Canadians alike, will serve to recognize our brothers and sisters on both sides of the border who dedicate their service, whether they are full-time, volunteer, military, wild land, or industrial firefighters. In all cases, these individuals risk the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.”
International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world recognizes and honours the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters are acknowledged for their contributions. International Firefighters ’Day is observed each year on the 4th of May.
“On this date, we call on citizens in North America to remember all firefighters who paid the ultimate price to protect their communities,” said Troy Markel, Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in the United States.. “They served with great honour, and their bravery will not be forgotten. I hope we can all show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.”
The Falls will be illuminated red between 10:00 and 10:15 p.m. that evening. The two sister organizations are very pleased to have jointly made this significant recognition a reality.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation extend their sincere gratitude for the red illuminations provided courtesy of The Niagara Falls Illumination Board and the CN Tower.

About the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to lead a nationwide effort to honor America’s fallen firefighters. Since 1992, the non-profit Foundation has developed and expanded programs that fulfill that mandate. Our mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes, provide resources to assist their families in rebuilding their lives, and work within the fire service community to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries.

2021 CFFF Memorial Weekend - Cancellation
The circumstances of the current worldwide pandemic have, once again, caused the Board of Directors of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) to have to consider the viability of our Annual Memorial Weekend.
Last year, when we had the sad responsibility to announce the cancellation of our Memorial Weekend, I don’t think any one of us envisioned that we would once again be faced with that critical decision, but situation and circumstances bring us to that point.
It is with a profound sense of sadness that we now advise that this year’s Memorial Weekend is similarly cancelled.
The Board of Directors continue to feel it is our duty to protect the health and safety of our families and colleagues while upholding our mission to Remember, Honour and Support our fallen.
Because of this our plans will change, from an in-person gathering at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa, to an online ceremony which will be broadcast through our Facebook page. Details on the 2021 virtual Memorial ceremony will be available closer to the date at www.cfff.ca.
Flags, as always, will fly at half-mast on September 12, which is Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, when all firefighters across Canada are recognized for their sacrifice, dedication, and bravery, particularly the fallen.
We remain hopeful that our in-person congregation for the Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony will resume in 2022, on the September 10-11 weekend, with the families from 2020, 2021 and 2022 taking part.
We thank everyone for your continued remembrance and honouring of the fallen along with your unwavering support of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The Stair Climb was another success raising over $2000 this year!
Erik Prain, owner of Bunker Gear, wanted to do something to help remember those that have fallen in service to their communities, so he did. Teaming up with Fireground, they designed a custom T-Shirt and Hoodie and for every one of them sold, 100% of the profits would be donated to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The campaign was titled “4THEFALLEN” and it worked! The Foundation is proud to be associated with great people like this and we hope to see future endeavours benefitting our Fallen and their families. Special thank you to Loyalist Fire Department for their amazing work helping Bunker Gear organize the First Annual “WALK 4THEFALLEN.”
Seen below is Erik Plain donating a $4,000.00 cheque to Treasurer and Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis. Thanks to the Moncton Fire Department for allowing us to snap a pic!
The 2020 virtual memorial took place on the 13 September at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa. Foundation President David Sheen was joined by CFFF Directors John Sobey and Bruce Paradis; CFFF Ambassadors CWO Martin Rousseau and Mark Prendergast as well as Ottawa, Gatineau and National Defence Fire Service members to honour our fallen. The Foundation was honoured to have musicians from Ottawa Fire to round out the ceremony all while maintaining pandemic regulations.

In September, the crew from Memorial Ride decided to go ahead and do a shortened ride that was pandemic friendly. Riding from Oakville to Toronto wasn’t the challenge they had accepted but it was, nonetheless, a ride for the Fallen which raised more than $23,000! Thanks to Dave Cossitt and all the riders that stepped forward to make this happen and a big thank you to all of their supporters.
2020 CANADIAN FIREFIGHTER MEMORIAL SERVICE
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation will conduct a solemn service to honour and remember all those firefighters that have given their lives in service to Canadians.
Join a small contingent of Foundation and local firefighters as we honour, virtually, those that have been engraved on the Canadian Firefighter Memorial. The ceremony will be live streamed (sponsored by M&L Supply) on the 13th of September at 1100 hours EST on the Foundation's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CFFF.FCPMS. We respectfully ask that the ceremony not be attended by those close to the memorial site in order to respect government guidelines during the pandemic.
Canadian Firefighters Memorial Ceremony Postponed in 2020
OTTAWA – For the first time in 17 years, Canadian firefighters who died in the line of duty will be honoured in a ‘virtual’ Canadian Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in 2020, instead of congregating in person on September 13.
Flags, as always, will fly at half-mast that day, which is Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, when all firefighters across Canada are recognized for their sacrifice, dedication, and bravery, particularly the fallen.
“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, frontline workers, families, and communities confront unprecedented risks,” said David Sheen, president of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “Families are faced with direct risks associated with frontline work while balancing employment and financial changes, home schooling, and vulnerabilities to COVID-19. The Board of Directors felt it was our duty to protect the health and safety of our families and colleagues while upholding our mission to remember, honour and support our fallen.”
Hosted annually by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, hundreds of firefighters from each of the provinces and territories typically flock to Ottawa to attend the ceremony in a show of solidarity and commemoration. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these plans will change, from an in-person gathering at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa, to an online ceremony which will be broadcast through YouTube. Details on the 2020 virtual Memorial will be available closer to the date at www.cfff.ca.
The in-person congregation for the Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony will resume in 2021, on the September 11-12 weekend, with the families from both this year and next taking part.
“To all families, colleagues, sponsors and donors, thank you for your continued remembrance and honour of the fallen along with your unwavering support in keeping everyone safe and healthy, and of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation,” added President Sheen.
The Canadian Firefighters Memorial, at the corner of Lett Street and the Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway in Ottawa, is a permanent and public commemoration that honours the sacrifice of every Canadian firefighter who has died in the line of duty since 1848.

Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation Special Release
As we travel through these challenging times, the Foundation is also experiencing angst as the board of directors looks towards future events. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Foundation has had to make the following decisions for the near future:
At this time, the Foundation hopes that the pandemic restrictions should be lifted by summer and that the ceremony will be held on the Firefighters’ National Memorial Day as planned.
The Executive will closely follow the situation and adjust as required to meet government requirements, and the advice of health care professionals. In the event that the ceremony must be postponed or cancelled due to public health concerns, an announcement will be promulgated no later than 60 days prior to the ceremony.
Our frontline first responders, are at the forefront of the efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus and impact community survivability. You selflessly serve others while contending with concerns for the potential health risk upon yourselves and your families
As a board of first responders, we urge all Canadians to follow the measures set down by their respective governmental bodies and together we can all beat this.
CFFF Director John Sobey met with officers and cadets of 872 RC Air Cadet Squadron recently to personally thank the members who have and continue to participate with the annual CFFF Memorial each September. The cadets assist the Foundation during the event by distributing memorial programs and water, assisting guests to seating, parking control, chair pick up and site clean after the ceremony! The 2019 presentation plaque was presented before the Squadron to Warrant Officer 1st Class Gluzman with Squadron Commanding Officer, Major Anica Boudreau. The Foundation is very appreciative of the support demonstrated each year by the young men and women of 872 Squadron.
Director Sobey presenting an appreciation plaque to Warrant Officer 1st Class Gluzman with Squadron Commanding Officer, Major Anica Boudreau for their excellent support each year.
During the week of November 18 to 21, Wildland Director James MacKinnon represented the CFFF at the Wildland Fire Canada Conference in Ottawa, Ontario. Held every two years, this conference brings together operational government agency fire mangers, wildland fire science researchers, policymakers, government executives, and industry vendors from across Canada and internationally. The goal of the Foundation is to maintain or increase the awareness within the wildland fire industry, to gain commitments from wildland fire agencies to send uniformed staff to the annual Memorial Weekend in Ottawa, and to develop corporate relationships as we pursue the Foundation’s goals. Thank you goes to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre for donating a wildland painting to be used as a raffle prize and appreciation goes to the conference organizers for generously providing booth space to the CFFF throughout the event.
Our own Wildland Director, James MacKinnon, attends the biennial Wildland Fire Canada conference in Ottawa in November
On September 29, 2019 Reebok CrossFit FirePower and the Milton Fire Department held a fun, unique fitness competition as part of their annual FIRE FIGHTER APPRECIATION DAY -FFAD. Proceeds went to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation to provide education and job training for families of fallen firefighters and contribute to the CFFF memorial weekend. The competition was open to the general public and all service personnel. Thank you to Andrea and George Savard for their continued support and raising awareness of the CFFF. They are true community partners of the fire service.
To date the Reebok CrossFit FirePower FFAD has raised over $75,000.00 for support of our Fallen families!
Shortly after the ceremony, members of the CFFF took the time to recognize the ongoing support of the Hotel of Record – Sheraton Ottawa. The CFFF has used the Sheraton since the inception of the memorial weekend in 2004, not only because it is the best deal for an Ottawa downtown hotel but, because of the staff. Every year, each member of their staff make it their sole purpose to ensure that the memorial weekend goes off without a hitch; from greeting and settling the families, serving up the family dinner, providing water for the parade on Sunday or sponsoring the ceremony each year, the Sheraton definitely looks after us.
Members of the CFF BoD present a thank-you plaque to the Sheraton Ottawa management team that help make each Canadian Firefighters Memorial the success that it is. At the Annual General Meeting in September, Director Wayne Jasper stepped down from the Board of Directors after giving his time to the Foundation for the last 12 years. Wayne joined the board in 2008 but was an avid supporter of the Foundation since 2004, attending every ceremony and taking on key roles. During his tenure as a director, Wayne took on the Line of Duty Death Chairman shortly after joining the board and carried on in this very integral position to 2018. Wayne also took on the web site redevelopment and all social media which, to anyone that has ever done this, is a tireless task for an organization as large as the CFFF. You may have also seen Wayne posting the Vigil at the ceremonies and issuing the Remembrance Medallions.
Wayne will be missed but, with his retirement from the NDFS and taking on new roles with the Anarchist Mountain Fire Department as Training Officer and now Deputy Fire Chief, we are sure that his plate is as full again as it was with us, thanks Wayne!
President of the CFFF David Sheen presents Director Wayne Jasper with a token of appreciation for his 12 years on the Board of Directors at the recent AGM in Ottawa.
In September of this year, a few days prior to the ceremony, bike riders from Toronto Fire and other departments came together after many practices to ride from Hamilton to the Canadian Firefighters’ Memorial in Ottawa. The ride has grown from 10 riders the first year to over 40 riders this year from seven different departments. This grueling 530 km journey was accepted by the riders including a firefighter from Newfoundland who was inspired after the 2018 ride. The Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Celtic Society was and is the driving force behind this very successful fundraiser benefiting the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation; and their President, Dave Cossitt is the creator of this ride. Over the last three years, the Celtic Society has raised $43,000, with over $27,000 this year alone easily surpassing their goal of $15,000. The Ride is supported by numerous departments along the route who generously provide breaks, facilities and in most cases, financial donations. The CFFF would like to recognize and thank all riders, support personnel and those that donated, and we hope that this tradition can continue in the future!

In July, Foundation Director and Atlantic representative Bruce Paradis attended the 106th MFCA conference and trade show in Moncton, New Brunswick. The show was a great success over the two days and our thanks goes out to the organizers for their continuing support. Besides selling the normal merchandise, the Foundation was able to address a couple of line of duty death inquiries and also get the word out to the fire officers in attendance. This annual event is a great way to connect with all of the Maritime provinces as the attendance is from far and wide.
Director William (Bill) Stewart, former Fire Chief of Toronto and Director to the Foundation attended the Toronto Fire Services Memorial Service held on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Harbour Front Fire Station. The annual pilgrimage to FDIC Atlantic took place on Saturday the eighth of June 2019 at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS. Thanks to the hard work of the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE) Logistics and Training unit, the one-day event again topped all expectations with attending firefighters from across the Maritimes coming out to support the CFFF. While attendance was down somewhat for the classes, we didn’t really feel the crunch with line ups at each and every break to purchase CFFF wares and tickets for the evening’s festivities. Another big thank you to the organizing committee for allowing us to attend. Winners and sponsors were:
Globe boots (Globe and K&D) – Adam Woods
Cairns Traditional Helmet (MSA) – John White
White Bullard Traditional Helmet (Bullard and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency) – Terry Nippard

The 6 and 7 of June this year saw CFFF Director Charles Olsen attending the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs Conference in Brandon, Manitoba.
Director Olsen and the CFFF would like to thank the Grand Valley Mutual Aid District for their hospitality during the event. The trade show booth was visited often by those attending the conference and we thank all of them who took the time out of their busy schedule to stop and help spread the word about the CFFF. With Manitoba as the 2019 Honorary Host of this years ceremony, there were many participants that stopped by the booth to enquire about the programs offered to the families of the fallen as well as the memorial weekend itself.
Charles Olsen, LODD Chairman and Manitoba-Saskatchewan Director for the CFFF mans the booth at the Manitoba Chiefs conference and trade show.
The Foundation was once again at the annual BC Fire Expo on the 2 and 3 of June 2019 in Penticton, British Columbia. First VP Doug Wylie and Director Wayne Jasper manned the booth and were, as always, swamped by those interested in the work of the Foundation. The booth was once again sponsored in part by Smith Brownlee & Associates, long time co-sponsors of the CFFF at the BC Fire Expo and Dave Mitchell and Associates, also co-sponsors and all are appreciated for their support.
One of our past family members was also able to stop by. Chief Dennis Allan Montgomery of the District of MacKenzie Fire Department was honored in Ottawa in 2009. Mrs. Sheila Montgomery has made several journeys back to Ottawa since her husband was honored and for the 10th Anniversary Sheila asked the Foundation if she could volunteer in any capacity to help the Fallen Firefighters Families, for 2019. It is always a pleasure to have family members come back and assist as they know first-hand what our families are going through.
In May, the Military Director to the Foundation, CWO Gerard Slaunwhite and his incoming replacement CWO Donnie Matthews donated the proceeds from the CWO Fund. The fund was established more than 20 years ago as a way to promote morale and fund retirement gifts with each CWO in the National Defence Fire Service contributing on an annual basis. With the decline in overall CWO positions in the RCAF, the Fire Service has seen over a 50% reduction in CWO positions and the remaining CWOs of the trade no longer saw it as feasible and decided to donate the balance of the fund to the CFFF. Thanks for thinking of our Fallen!

Karen Suidan, a teacher with the Dolphin Senior Public School in Mississauga, was travelling to Ottawa with the school band for the national music festival called MusicFest Canada. Karen is the daughter of Captain William Terrell (Toronto Fire Services) who was added to the CFFF memorial wall during the 2017 ceremony. Karen contacted the CFFF to arrange for her students to visit the memorial on May 16th. Her plan was to have the students find her fathers name, and perform the Last Post followed with a moment of silence in honour of all fallen fire fighters.
Karen’s request was sent to CFFF ceremony director, John Sobey who contacted Karen and arranged to meet with her and students. Director Sobey who is also a member of Ottawa Fire Services arranged for a pump and ladder crew to attend the event in support of the special occasion. Following the small ceremony, director Sobey explained the background of the memorial site and the history of the CFFF. The Ottawa Fire crews took the time to show the students their apparatus and equipment.
The Foundation wishes to thank Ms. Suidan and the students from Dolphin Senior Public for taking the time to visit and pay their respects to all of Canada’s fallen fire fighters while visiting the nation’s capital.
In May, Cannery Brewing Co. owner Patt Dyck met with CFFF Director Wayne Jasper to provide their donation from sales of the last batch of Wildfire IPA. Cannery Brewing has supported the Foundation with this special brew for many years and we appreciate their continued efforts (and the beer!) from the Cannery Brewing Co.
A message from Cannery Brewing Co. owner Patt Dyck...
"As the wildfires have already started for the season, we want to take a moment to pause and recognize all of the firefighters and emergency service workers who work so hard to fight the wildfires here in the Okanagan, across the province and into Alberta and beyond. We are honoured to be able to support the great work of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation as we donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of our Wildfire IPA to this incredible organization each year."
FSANS annual conference was held the weekend of the 13-14 May 2019 in Truro, NS. The Foundation was invited to attend the trade show and Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis was happy to oblige. Many chiefs, officers and firefighters came by during the weekend to support and receive more information about the CFFF. The conference was another great success and we thank all those that showed their generosity!

Director Olsen would like to thank Host Chief Rod Montgomery for the invitation to attend. The trade show booth was visited often and a big thank you to all who took the time out of their busy conference schedule to stop by the booth to help spread the word about the CFFF. Many of the participants stopped by the booth to inquire about the programs offered to the families of the fallen as well as the memorial weekend.

Correcting an oversight and just making things right, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation is very pleased to announce that one of our founders, and the first President of the Foundation Dr. Will Brooks, has been appointed as an Ambassador of the CFFF.
Undoubtedly, Will’s most cherished work has been that of Founder of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Along with Georges Potvin and Bill Williams, Will found the resources to start the ball rolling and host the offices of the Foundation in his home from 2002-2007.
We look forward to Will’s assistance and contribution as we continue to build the CFFF to Honour and Remember our Fallen, and Support those left behind.

Shortly after the annual memorial, the Foundation was invited to attend the unveiling of the firefighters’ stamp in Halifax, home to the country’s oldest fire department. Thursday, the 13th of September was the day that the firefighters’ stamp was shown to the public.
“The stamp depicts a determined firefighter up close as two firefighters battle an inferno in the background. The image is intentionally universal, in order to reflect part-time or full-time professionals or volunteer firefighters in any community. They all save lives and protect property and the environment with their skills and courage” (CPC)
It was an honour to attend such a recognition event and we hope that all Canadians have the opportunity to collect (or use!) the firefighter stamp as well as all of the first responder series.
The CFFF attended the public unveiling of the new First Responders stamp recognizing firefighters.
CFFF Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis and Friend of the Foundation Dave Clement attended the 2018 unveiling of the Firefighter stamp.

As a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe, the Canadian government proclaimed the second Sunday in September of each year as Firefighters’ National Memorial Day in memory of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation is reminding all fire service organizations that on Sunday September 9, 2018 all flags should be half-masted at all fire service stations in Canada to coincide with Canadian flags half-masted on all federal buildings and establishments.
The Government of Canada recognizes the dangers firefighters often face when carrying out their duties, and the ultimate sacrifice of firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. Firefighters’ National Memorial Day commemorates their courage, their selflessness, and their unwavering commitment to serving our communities.
The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation will be conducting the annual memorial ceremony at the site of the Canadian Firefighters Memorial, in Ottawa, at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday September 9. Visit the 2018 Ceremony Details for more info.
In July, the CFFF attended the 2018 Atlantic Fire Leadership Conference in Moncton, NB put on by the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association (MFCA). Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis and Director Wayne Jasper manned the CFFF trade show booth which was very well attended by members of the MFCA. Thanks to everyone who attended the Heroes Festival in Wasaga Beach Ontario on June 23/24. The event honoured first responders and the military with displays, demonstrations and a great air show featuring the Snowbirds. Thanks to M &L Supply and Mark Prendergast for providing excellent fire service specific demonstrations for the public and providing space for the Foundation.
The long and daunting 206km Trek is now behind me. It has been an emotional rollercoaster since leaving Grande Prairie Fire Department Station 1 on Saturday, June 9th. I had some really difficult moments such as running against 50km/hr gusting wind combined with cold hard rain, or starting days 2, 3, 4, and 5 with foot and leg injuries that were progressively getting worse (I’ve been told I hid it well).
Despite these, I also had some really high moments that made it all worthwhile. The overwhelming support from family, emergency services (fire, police and EMS alike), friends and the community at large was incredible. Running alongside other firefighters, RCMP, municipal employees, my father, and my brother helped me keep pace and encouraged me to keep going strong until the next checkpoint. Receiving messages of thanks from friends and family members of LODD firefighters put meaning to what I was doing.
So many high points in my journey carried me to the finish.
Together, we raised (so far) over $13,000 for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation while also bringing awareness to the importance of staying fit and healthy. It’s never too late to donate. You can do so at cfff.ca and if you wish to have your donation amount added to the Northern Trek total tally, mention “Northern Trek” in the message section of the donation form.
Thank you!!

From April 12 to 15 of this year, CFFF Director Charles Olsen attended the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs Conference in Regina, SK. The theme of “One Team, One Vision” was reflected throughout the weekend with stories of the heroic efforts of the first responders that were called to duty in response to the Humboldt bus tragedy. The accident took place mere days before the opening ceremonies of the conference and the effects of that day were very present in the minds of all those in attendance.
A conference highlight was the keynote address given by retired Fire Chief Darby Allen, who spoke of the Fort McMurray wildfires.
The CFFF would like to congratulate Denis Pilon, Fire Chief in Swift Current, on being the recipient of the SAFC annual Fire Chief Award of Merit and wish him all the best on his retirement from the department later this year.
Congratulations also go out to Randy Ryba, with Regina Fire and Protective Services, who was presented with the Fire Prevention Award at this year’s conference.

In December, Director John Sobey presented 872 Air Cadet Squadron with a small token of appreciation from the Foundation. Each and every year, 872 Air Cadets step up to the plate and assist with the annual memorial ceremony. The cadets help with traffic and pedestrian control, pass out programs, ensure the bands and marching contingents are provided water and help with the ceremony take down. The value they provide each year is immense and saves the Foundation funds for family support programs. Bravo Zulu!

REGINA — Canadian flags will now fly at half-mast in an annual solemn day of honour as firefighters across Canada are recognized for their sacrifice, dedication, and bravery. The second Sunday of every September, beginning September 10 on the day of the annual Canadian Fallen Firefighter Foundation (CFFF) Memorial Ceremony, was designated today as ‘Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
Led by the joint efforts of the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and the CFFF, the news of the official designation of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day was received warmly by the families of all firefighters across Canada and those who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
CFFF President Robert Kirkpatrick and CAFC President Ken Block with Minister Goodale for announcement.
“This is a significant milestone to have an annual day dedicated to those who have fallen in the Canadian fire service, and to also recognize the loss to their families and loved ones,” said Captain Robert Kirkpatrick, president of the CFFF. “The Government of Canada has demonstrated that they truly appreciate the sacrifice and commitment of firefighters in this country.”
In March 2017, Minister Goodale announced the Community Heroes Benefit, a compensation fund for families who have lost a first responder in the line of duty. The designation of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day is further testament to the value the federal government places in the role of the firefighter.
On Sunday, September 10, Minister Goodale will deliver the keynote address in Ottawa at the 2017 Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony where families of the fallen from across Canada will be in attendance and recognized for the sacrifice of their loved one lost in the line of duty.
The Board of the CFFF is deeply committed to the families of the fallen and engages with them on an ongoing basis. The Foundation is all-inclusive in its recognition and support of the fallen, whether they are volunteer, who represent eighty percent of all firefighters, full-time, military, wildland, or industrial firefighters.

Your Worship, distinguished guests from Regina and across the country.
Bonjour tout le monde.
Good morning everyone. It is a great privilege to be back once again at Fire Hall #5 in Regina this morning, surrounded by some of Canada's finest, the brave and selfless women and men who put their lives on the line every day to protect all of us. Greetings and good wishes from Prime Minister Trudeau and the Government of Canada, and indeed I'm sure I bring with me the gratitude of the whole country for the sacrifices that you and your families are called upon to make.
That includes the heroic work of your colleagues in British Columbia this year, and particularly around Kelowna this morning, and in Fort McMurray last year, and in Northern Saskatchewan the year before that and in communities across the country every day, fighting fires and keeping people safe.
These efforts have been recognized around the world and have demonstrated in spades the tenacity and courage and skill of Canadian firefighting services. On behalf of all Canadians, thank you.
In addition to members of Regina's Fire and Protective services who are with us this morning, I am very pleased to be joined by several other representatives of the firefighting community across the country. Lloyd Zwack is the President of the Saskatchewan Professional Firefighters Association and he is also representing here today the International Association of Firefighters; Edmonton Chief Ken Block is here as President of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs; Richard Kent is Vice-President of the Aboriginal Firefighters Association of Canada; Graham Pawlett and Troy Mutch are President and Vice-President of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Service Association.
Serge Poulin is representing the indispensable Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. The President of the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs, Ken Eskra from Churchbridge is here. So is Chief Dale Feser from Estevan, and of course Robert Kirkpatrick, President of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Bob, the tireless work of your organization has been instrumental in making today's announcement possible. Thank you for your determined advocacy, your passion, your dedication to preserving and celebrating the memories of those who have served and fallen in this noble and essential calling.
September 11th, of course, holds huge significance for firefighters everywhere. Every year, on the second Sunday in September, as close as possible to the 11th, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation has organized a very moving ceremony to honour brave firefighters who have given their lives in service to us all and they've done that every year since 2004. People from across Canada gather on that day, the second Sunday in September, at the impressive memorial site in Ottawa to remember and pay tribute and to share the pride and the grief felt by the families and friends of firefighters who were killed in the line of duty.
Local services have long been held in memory of fallen firefighters in communities across the country. But Canada has never had a formally established national day designated to honour and remember the sacrifices of firefighters. Until now. Today, I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada proclaims the second Sunday in September of each year to be Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, beginning on Sunday, September 10th, 2017.
Et je le répète en français : Le deuxième dimanche de septembre chaque année sera officiellement le Jour commémoratif national des pompiers.
On my recommendation through Order in Council, the Governor General has directed that a proclamation be issued immediately to this effect. In addition, each year on that day, the Canadian flag will fly at half-mast on all federal buildings and establishments, including the Peace Tower, from sunrise to sunset. Half-masting is a rare honour, and it's my hope that when Canadians see the flag lowered every year at the local post office or on the RCMP detachment, as well as on Parliament Hill, it will cause them to ask why, and then inspire them to think of the firefighters at work in their communities and the ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
In my Public Safety portfolio, I have a lot of tough things to deal with. But one of the upsides is getting to know and to work with firefighters and emergency workers of all kinds. And we've been pushing an agenda to support their needs, renewing national funding for the heavy search and rescue teams across all the regions of Canada; creating a new compensation award to help the families of first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty; working with Public Safety, Health Canada and other federal departments, as well as provinces and territories, to install a truly national action plan to better cope with post-traumatic stress injuries; developing better communications systems to function during emergency responses; improvements to the building code; and so on.
There is a lot to get done. But we've got momentum and great support from Canadians because they recognize, from coast to coast to coast, this vital fact:
While most people are doing their best to escape a disaster and get out of harm's way, first responders like firefighters are running directly into it, and they do that to protect people, to save lives with the full knowledge that something bad might happen. When tragedy strikes, the grief felt by a firefighter's family and colleagues is shared by the whole country. And that's why we need Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, to come together to remember and mourn together, to support one another and to celebrate those wonderful lives.
And now, that day is officially proclaimed. It will be my honour to join all of you in Ottawa on Sunday, September 10th, 2017. Thank you very much.
The largest fire conference in Atlantic Canada is the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association, attended by representatives from all four Atlantic provinces. The 2017 conference was in Moncton NB from the 9th to the 12th of July. The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation was invited to speak and run a kiosk for the event thanks to Conrad Landry, Chief of Dieppe and host for the conference. It was a very successful three days and the opportunity to speak to the delegates on the roles of the Foundation was very much appreciated. We hope to see everyone there next year!

Our annual pilgrimage to Wolfville Nova Scotia for the Fire Department Information Conference or FDIC Atlantic took place in June. The continuing support of both the organizers that provide our space and the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) folks, namely Dave Clement and his clan, raised a significant amount of funds for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) in less than eight hours! Of course, this would not be possible without the recurring support of the many firefighters that attend each year. Thanks to everyone and we hope that you keep up the excellent support!
The CFFF joined forces with the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) folks for the annual FDIC Atlantic (2017). Thanks to (l-r) Bruce Paradis, Myles Faulkner, Dave Clement, Norman Lavoie, Bryson Wilson and Basil Mitchel and all those that supported the event!

OTTAWA – Families who have lost one of their own in the line of duty as a Canadian firefighter will receive federal government compensation for the first time in Canadian history through the Community Heroes Benefit, according to the 2017 federal budget announced yesterday.
“Compensation to the families of our fallen firefighters is a meaningful gesture that will be deeply respectful and consoling in their time of need,” said Captain Robert Kirkpatrick, President of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “The Community Heroes Benefit shows that the sacrifice of the fallen to their country and community is sincerely appreciated by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, has advocated for the Community Heroes Benefit, particularly following his keynote address and personal time spent with families of fallen firefighters at the Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial Ceremony in 2016.
“The Board of the CFFF looks forward to working with Minister Goodale in developing the details of the Community Heroes Benefit,” added Captain Kirkpatrick. On behalf of all the families of fallen firefighters, the Foundation extends its sincere thanks to the Minister and his government for listening to the needs of the fire service.”
The Board of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) is deeply committed to the families of the fallen and engages with them on an annual and ongoing basis. The Foundation is all-inclusive in its recognition and support of the fallen whether they are full-time, part-time, volunteer, military, wildland, or industrial firefighters.

As 2017 begins the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation looks back on another year. The Foundation honored twelve families at the annual ceremony in September which was hosted by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management for the Province of Ontario as they celebrated 100 years in existence. Fifty-four fallen were added to the memorial wall. The 2016 ceremony was held on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and we remembered the 343 New York firefighters lost that day as well.
The Foundation was honoured to have the new Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honorable Ralph Goodale, attend our weekend activities and support the Foundation and our families.
The 2017 ceremony will take place at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa on September 10 hosted by Halifax Regional Fire Rescue as they remember the 100th anniversary of their nine firefighters killed at the Halifax explosion in 1917 , which also killed approximately 2,000 people and injured an estimated 9,000 others.
With the great help of our sponsors and donators, the Foundation continues to provide support for the families of our fallen with many programs. Our education program saw two new four-year scholarships awarded and several families sent to Camp F.A.C.E.S. last summer. Please visit our website at cfff.ca for details of all our activities.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, I wish all our supporters and families a safe and prosperous 2017.
Robert Kirkpatrick
President, CFFF

The 6th annual Firefighter Appreciation Day (FFAD) to benefit The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation was held on Saturday, October 1st, 2016 at Reebok CrossFit FirePower in Milton, Ontario. Teams of men and women participated on a rainy day to challenge their strength, stamina, team work, and strategy. All events were designed to mimic scenarios that firefighters face in intense on-the-job situations and the tactics they use to perform their jobs on a daily basis.
With the support of the Milton Fire Department, Toronto Fire Services and Toronto Firefighters Association who donate supplies and equipment, teams were comprised of current firefighters and also civilians looking to test their fitness levels completing the events wearing full bunker gear and scbas.
This year the event raised approximately $10,000 bringing the 6 year total to well over $42,000 for the CFFF! This year’s event also included approximately $1500 from a car wash run by the Milton Fire Department on September 11th the day of the CFFF annual ceremony in Ottawa.
Special thanks to Andrea and George Savard at Milton Crossfit for their continued commitment to the CFFF and its goals. For more information on the events and photos, visit www.firefighterappreciationday.ca
After a quick hop over to Newfoundland for the CAFC in St. John’s, the Canadian Fallen Firefighter Foundation was in Prince Edward Island, more specifically – New London for the annual PEI Firefighters Association meeting and training weekend. Not our first time on the island and certainly not our last as the hospitality shown by the New London Fire Company was second to none. Perfect venue for a get together and Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis was busy discussing CFFF goals and family support with many who dropped by the booth on the trade show floor. The message at this conference was for departments to get out and look at their historic records for any Line of Duty Deaths that may have not been recognized to date. Interestingly, many of those that stopped by knew of names from their respective departments that are not on the Canadian Firefighter Memorial and hopefully those names will be submitted soon. Thanks to CAFC and all those that attended for supporting our worthy cause!

Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis had the honour of attending the 2016 conference in Sydney and meeting up with many old friends of the Foundation as well as making new ones. Once again the Canadian Fallen Firefighter Foundation attended the Fire Department Information Conference or FDIC Atlantic in June. With the never ending support of the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) folks, namely Dave Clement and his clan, the CFFF raised over $3300.00 in less than eight hours! This would not be possible without the recurring support of the FDIC and the many firefighters that attend each year. Hats off to this annual event as it is the CFFF’s largest tradeshow fundraiser each year other than the Ladder’s Up for the CFFF!
CFFF Atlantic Director Bruce Paradis joined the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) folks for the annual FDIC Atlantic (2016). On behalf of the CFFF, Director John Clare and President Robert Kirkpatrick recently accepted a large donation of approximately $14,000 from Madelaine Raiz, Chairman of the City of Brampton Employees’ Fundraising Campaign.
The Corporation of the City of Brampton with its employees are committed to supporting the community and fostering social responsibility. The City’s Employee Fundraising Campaign (EFC) is tasked with raising funds for organizations within the community that truly make a difference in people’s lives. In 2015, the EFC ran a series of events and programs to support 4 different charitable organizations including the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The event roster included: food festivals, a chocolate challenge, a casual dress day plan, a pancake breakfast, a community car wash, and many more. These events united city staff with local businesses and residents to successfully support and give back to our community.
The City of Brampton and its Fire & Emergency Services has always been a big supporter of the CFFF and acted as honorary host in Ottawa in 2009. The BFES honour guard has always assisted in the operation of the annual ceremony and other CFFF events around Ontario. Thanks again to the City of Brampton for their continued support which allows the Foundation to carry on its family support programs!
As 2015 ends the Foundation looks back on another year. The Foundation honored nine families at the annual ceremony in September. While the Foundation is excited to expand our family support programs to include a partnership with Camp Faces, we are saddened to see the loss of several firefighters in the line of duty including two from the wildland service in 2015.
It has also been a tragic year for people closely related to the fire service. Student Adam Brunt died training to become a firefighter and student Campbell Smith died in an incident unrelated to the fire service while studying to become a firefighter. The Foundation expresses its sincere condolences to these families and the families of all those who died in the line of duty in 2015.
The 2016 ceremony will take place on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 on September 11, 2016 at the site of the Canadian Firefighters Memorial. This year’s honorary host will be the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management for the Province of Ontario as they celebrate 100 years in existence.
On behalf of the Foundation we wish all our supporters and families a peaceful holiday season and hope all will stay safe.

CFFF President Robert Kirkpatrick had the honour of presenting a CFFF scholarship award to Michael Gray. Michael is the son of Toronto Fire Services Acting Captain David Gray who died from a work related illness on March 9, 2010 at the age of 48. He joined the fire service in 1987. Michael, accompanied by his mother Carolyn, was presented the award at the Barrie (ON) Fire & Emergency Services HQ near their home. Michael is currently enrolled in the Paramedic Care program at Georgian College. The Foundation would like to thank all our supporters of the Education Fund and Barrie Fire Chief John Lynn and his staff for facilitating the presentation.
The 5th annual Lethbridge 9/11 memorial stairclimb went off without a hitch this past September. New this year was public participation and our community did not disappoint with 52 climbers registered to climb (and descend) the 110 stories. We use this distance as it marks the same height that the World Trade Center stood at before their collapse on Sept 11 2001. We do the climb primarily for awareness of all first responders that we've lost over the years; not just those on 9/11 - so that we never forget. Having such a great turn out from the public was very humbling.
We've also began to realize that we are able to run the event and cover all our costs at the same time so this year we've also been able to provide a modest donation to the CFFF. As always, we still had a fair amount of first responders climbing from many departments and agencies including police and EMS and of course firefighters from Nanton, Claresholm, Milk River, Raymond and Coaldale to name a few. Some of these are the toughest of the tough climbing with full turnouts and high rise equipment!
These 9/11 climbs are a very big deal in the USA but as far as we know, we are the only event in Canada that climbs the whole 110 stories for first responders. I would encourage anyone in their community to put one together. The experience is second to none. Our 2016 climb is already set to go on Sept 11 and we look forward to anyone in the area to come and climb with us. We will have a link for registration and information up in the new year.
CFFF President Robert Kirkpatrick and Treasurer Bruce Paradis made the trip to Newfoundland for the Newfoundland & Labrador Association of Fire Services Convention Oct 2-5 in Gander. The CFFF attended the CAFC 2015 Conference held in Victoria, BC in September. CFFF 1st Vice President Doug Wylie and Director Wayne Jasper manned the booth with the help of director David Sheen who was in attendance at the conference. It was a pleasure sharing information about the CFFF with Fire Officers from across Canada and nice to see Past-Director Serge Tremblay, Retired City of Montreal Fire Chief. During the trade show portion of the conference, the CFFF was very proud to present to Courtney Hill, daughter of fallen firefighter Dave Hill from CFB Esquimalt the Doug Lock Memorial Scholarship for 2015. We were honoured to have Courtney spend some time with us at the booth. It was very heartwarming for many in attendance to meet Courtney as she was able to express how important their support of the CFFF can be in helping the families of the fallen.

William Alexander Garvie Hilts
1977 – 2015
William Hilts died on Friday May 22nd, doing what he loved, flying a water bomber fighting forest fires in northern Alberta. He was 38. He leaves behind his parents, Maria and Stewart Hilts, his younger brother Matthew and his wife Paula, his sister Katherine and her husband Darryl, his nephew Jaxson, and his grandmother Rosa Gallo, as well as many other aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves a very strong network of friends in BC and elsewhere, many with ties to the flying community.
William took his pilot training at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, later flying for Kenora Air Services, Turtle Airways in Fiji, Harbour Air out of Prince Rupert, and Wasaya Airways in northern Ontario. He worked his way to his dream job flying water bombers for Conair in BC and Alberta starting four years ago. He was part of the team fighting the Cold Lake fire when his plane went down.
I’m saddened to inform you that a contract airtanker fighting a wildland fire in the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range crashed yesterday, killing the pilot. The aircraft went down approximately 40 kilometres north of Cold Lake late this afternoon, and the pilot was the sole occupant.
The RCMP have not released the name of the pilot, pending notification of next of kin.
This accident is a reminder of the dangerous nature of our work. Each year, the department spends more than 30,000 hours in the air protecting the province’s natural resources, and every day hundreds of ESRD employees and contractors put their lives on the line to ensure public safety for all Albertans.
The department is co-operating fully with the RCMP, local authorities and investigators from the Transportation Safety Board. The department will also conduct an investigation into this accident.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the pilot’s family and friends. The safety of all ESRD staff and contractors involved in fighting wildland fires is also upmost in our minds.

Saturday June 21 marked the Sarnia Saints Rugby Club’s 5th annual “Playing it Forward” charity benefit day with this year's recipient being the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, along with the Sarnia Professional Firefighters Association Benefit and the Point Edward Fire and Rescue.
The club raised money through a banquet dinner held at Jack Doyle's on Friday, June 13 as well as the auctioning of memorial jerseys that are worn on the day of the game. Organizer and Club president Chris Groombridge said that he has seen the benefit day grow tremendously over the last five years, and credits that to the level of support Sarnia has for its' community. “We're a sport club and our focus is sport but it's good to do something for the rest of the community,” he said. “Every year it just seems to be a little more successful and it's fun. We enjoy doing it.”
Saints' women's side player Myrissa Kendall is the daughter of firefighter Gary Kendall of the Point Edward Fire Rescue who died in 2010 during an ice water training exercise in the St. Clair River.
Myrissa was working towards a degree in Behavioural Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia at the time of the accident. Upon her return to school after her Dad’s funeral, she received the news that she’d be unable to complete her degree as she had missed so much time there. The Foundation was able to award an education bursary to Myrissa to help her finish her studies.
“I know I will never be able to repay what the Foundation has contributed to my family. I was able to finish off my degree and knowing I'm able to give some of that money back, I just can't express in words how much it means to me and how much it means to have the Saints supporting me,” she said.
The Executive and Board of Directors are extremely grateful to Mr. Groombridge and the Saints Club for having this fundraiser for the Foundation and their local fire services!
Special thanks to CFFF Ambassador Janny Elg for attending the event on behalf of the Foundation.

Fallen Pickering firefighter honoured with street in his name
VERONICA HENRI Toronto Sun
First posted: Saturday, November 23, 2013 03:09 PM EST | Updated: Saturday, November 23, 2013 04:01 PM EST
PICKERING - Fallen firefighter Ray Zents’ name will live on along a brand new stretch of road close to where he saved many lives and property.
Ten years after his death from work-related cancer in 2003, a street in his name — Zents Dr. — was unveiled Saturday in the Brock and Taunton Rds. area.
The green sign is complemented by a Pickering Fire Services logo.
Under greying skies, about 20 firefighters and department brass joined Zents’ family as a firefighter ascended a ladder and brought the street sign to life.
Barbara Zents thanked everyone for honouring her husband’s memory and, while she appreciated the sign, she acknowledged her husband’s humble side.
“Ray is looking down at us and thinking, I wonder what all the fuss is about,” she told the gathering.
Zents is the first Pickering firefighter whose death has been recognized as occurring in the line of duty from cancer. It may have almost a decade to recognize his life was lost because of the hazards of firefighting, but time did not cloud the memories of colleagues.
“He had an amazing, calming nature on the guys in the trucks,” recalled Capt. John Mairs. “He would see a fire off in the distance and say, ‘We are just going to put it out.’”
Platoon Chief Ian Eibbitt agreed.
Zents was his senior in age and experience when they started working together, but their friendship grew and Zents became best man at his wedding.
“He bred confidence in those around him, because he was so calm. I could not ask for a better guy to work with,” said Eibbitt.
Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government passed legislation in 2007 requiring the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to recognize eight types of cancer as work-related for firefighters.
As the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) continues to push for legislative changes, Colin Arnott, president of the Pickering Professional Firefighters Association, keeps a positive perspective and plans to pay tribute to more members of the service who died of work-related illnesses in upcoming ceremonies.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston honoured the nation’s firefighters on Sunday, thanking them for their willingness to go “the wrong way” into danger for the benefit of their communities.
He delivered his remarks at the unveiling of the new Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa, a monument intended to pay tribute to nearly 1,100 firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
In his prepared remarks, Johnston praised the firefighters’ “courage and dedication.”
He added that the fallen firefighters “represent an ideal of service and selflessness that is very rare and very precious.”
The newly built Canadian Firefighters Memorial sits at the corner of Wellington and Lett Streets, near a commemorative wall listing the names of firefighters who died while serving.
The memorial was designed by Canadian artist and author Douglas Coupland and Mary Tremain, a partner at PLANT Architect Inc.
Mary Day travelled to Ottawa with her son, Glen, to honour her husband, Archibald Hall, whose name is etched on the memorial.
“It’s hard to explain what it feels like today,” Day told CTV Ottawa as her son marvelled at the number of fallen firefighters.
“It’s amazing to see 1,100 names,” Glen said. “I can’t believe there would be that many.”
Karen Glendinning travelled from British Columbia on her motorcycle with two firefighters who worked with her late husband.
“He was a great friend, father,” she said. “Sadly, he didn’t become a grandfather until after he passed.”
The governor general spoke in Ottawa’s LeBreton Flats neighbourhood near the site of a massive fire that broke out in the spring of 1900, killing seven people. The spot is also close to the place where Captain John Lowry, an Ottawa firefighter, died while battling a blaze in 1896.
Johnston referenced these examples, pointing to the risks that accompany firefighting.
His comments came two days after a parade to honour Canadian firefighters who have died both on and off the job wound its way through Ottawa’s downtown core on Friday.
Present at the annual memorial event, now in its eleventh year, was Steve Kemp whose firefighter father died from leukemia he developed from exposure to toxic materials.
“You kind of think you're not risking your life everyday, but it was the choice that he made ages ago that really ended catching up to him and taking his life at the end,” he told CTV Ottawa.
Kemp’s story underscored a common message at the ceremony: not all firefighters die while battling fires or charging into burning buildings.
“Its risky work and I don't think people fully understand what really goes into being a firefighter,” said Kemp.
With a report from CTV Ottawa’s Norman Fetterley and Ellen Mauro
